As a Senior Special Investigator with the Minnesota Department of Education, you will serve in the statewide coordination, implementation, assessment and investigation of educational program compliance related to child maltreatment occurring in or affiliated with public schools. Duties will include:

  • Receive and assess reports of alleged maltreatment, and refer to appropriate state and local entities as necessary;
  • Conduct forensic interviews, collect and analyze data, draft and issue determination reports;
  • Coordinate with law enforcement and testify in administrative and court proceedings;
  • Provide technical assistance and training on maltreatment laws and mandated reporting;
  • Perform legal research, peer review and special projects as assigned;
  • Adhere to data practice standards and agency policies when creating documents, communicating with internal and external stakeholders, and conducting intake assessments and investigations.

Applicants should be prepared for travel up to 50% of the time. Most travel will occur within the metro area and could include occasional trips elsewhere as needed.

This position is eligible for hybrid telework. Employees living within 50 miles of the office location listed above will be required to work in the office at least 50% of the time each month. Employees may reside outside the state of Minnesota if they live in a state bordering Minnesota and are within 50 miles of the primary work location. Existing employees who were approved to telework from a bordering state and more than 50 miles from their work location before June 1, 2025, may retain this arrangement unless they move farther away.

Minimum Qualifications

Five (5) years of professional experience in conducting criminal, administrative or civil investigations related to child maltreatment matters.

OR

A bachelor's or master's degree and four (4) years of professional experience conducting criminal, administrative or civil investigations related to child maltreatment matters.

Knowledge of:

  • State and federal child maltreatment laws and regulations
  • Minnesota Data Practices Act and related privacy laws
  • Child development and special education rules and regulations
  • Investigative techniques and interviewing standards

Demonstrated skill and experience in:

  • Written and verbal communication, including the ability to independently prepare, review and complete reports recommending a final decision in accordance with statutory authority
  • Analytical thinking and problem-solving
  • Interpreting and explaining laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures to others in a clear and understandable manner.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Social Work, Public Administration, Law, Criminal Justice, Human Resources or closely related field
  • Experience conducting institutional investigations in educational or governmental settings
  • Certified in forensic interviewing of child abuse victims from an accredited child advocacy center
