Job Description

We are seeking a reliable and detail-oriented custodian to maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming environment at our nationally accredited early childhood program in Columbus, Ohio. This role supports daily facility operations, helps ensure compliance with health and safety standards, and contributes to a positive atmosphere for children, families, and staff. The ideal candidate is dependable, collaborative, and committed to preserving a high standard of cleanliness and safety throughout the school.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine cleaning tasks including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and restroom sanitation across classrooms, hallways, offices, and common areas.
  • Clean, sanitize, and restock restrooms and diapering/toileting areas in accordance with program and licensing requirements.
  • Empty trash and recycling receptacles; transport waste to designated collection areas.
  • Maintain and sanitize kitchen and food preparation areas when applicable, following food safety guidelines and program protocols.
  • Set up and break down furniture and equipment for events, meetings, and daily classroom needs; move and arrange items safely following ergonomic best practices.
  • Monitor and report maintenance needs such as leaking fixtures, lighting issues, HVAC irregularities, or building damage; coordinate with facilities staff or vendors for repairs as needed.
  • Perform routine groundskeeping tasks including snow removal, sweeping sidewalks, and maintaining entryways to ensure safe access.
  • Follow cleaning schedules, checklists, and chemical usage guidelines; maintain accurate records of completed tasks and supply inventories.
  • Assist with inventory control of custodial supplies and equipment; request replenishment in a timely manner.
  • Adhere to all health, safety, and infection-control protocols; use personal protective equipment (PPE) and cleaning chemicals safely and as directed.
  • Work cooperatively with teachers, kitchen staff, administrators, and families to minimize disruption and support program operations.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience: Previous custodial, janitorial, or facilities experience preferred; experience in a school or childcare setting is a plus.
  • Skills:
    • Knowledge of cleaning methods, chemicals, and proper care of surfaces and equipment.
    • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, checklists, and safety procedures.
    • Good time-management skills and ability to prioritize tasks to meet schedules.
    • Physical ability to perform manual tasks regularly, including lifting, bending, standing, and climbing ladders as needed.
    • Strong communication and teamwork skills; respectful and professional interactions with children, families, and staff.
  • Certifications: Custodial training or certifications preferred but not required; willingness to complete training in safe chemical handling and PPE use.
  • Ability to pass background screening and any required health checks, including immunization requirements.

Schedule & Work Environment

This position may be full-time or part-time and can include early morning, evening, or occasional weekend shifts to support cleaning schedules and special events. Must be comfortable working independently as well as part of a team in a busy school environment with children present during program hours.
