POSITION SUMMARY:

The Instructional Coach plays a vital leadership role in supporting teachers and teaching assistants to deliver high-quality instruction in literacy and mathematics.  This role focuses on strengthening instructional practices, improving scholar engagement, and using assessment data to guide individualized learning. The Instructional Coach provides professional development, conducts classroom observations, and collaborates with site leadership to ensure the program meets both academic and youth development goals.  The Instructional Coach also supports teachers with data-driven instruction, occasionally teaches or substitutes when needed, oversees assessments, and partners with families and site leadership to ensure scholar success.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

Power Scholars Academy is a national summer learning program designed to help close the opportunity gap for students who may be performing below grade level in reading and/or math.

The program combines high-quality academic instruction with enrichment experiences to support academic achievement, social development, and confidence building.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  •  Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
  • New Hampshire State Teaching Certification required
  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience teaching elementary or middle school students in a public school setting
  • Previous experience serving as an instructional coach, lead teacher, or head of instruction preferred
  • Experience coaching instructional staff and delivering professional development
  • Experience using technology platforms for instruction and assessment
  • Demonstrated commitment to youth development and closing opportunity gaps
  • Passion for working with children and supporting their success

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with various stakeholders, including scholars, families, and Power Scholars Academy and district colleagues.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of research-based instructional strategies that engage all students across subject areas (ELA and math).
  • Using Scholastic/Bellxcel curriculum to support lesson planning.
  • Content area expertise in ELA, math or both.
  • Ability to identify staff learning needs, and design and deliver appropriate individualized or group professional development and coaching to meet needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to use data to inform student groupings and differentiate instruction.
  • Strong working knowledge of instructional shifts necessary for alignment to the Common Core State Standards.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, and adjust and adapt instructional strategies swiftly given the short duration of summer programs (4 weeks).
  • Evidence of efficacy and willingness to be a team player.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Instructional Coach has three primary areas of responsibility:

  1. Professional Development & Coaching
  • Facilitate pre-service and ongoing professional development for instructional staff, including:
    • Power Scholars Academy philosophy and Standards of Practice
    • Program expectations and procedures
    • Curriculum implementation and instructional strategies
    • Data-driven instruction and student grouping
    • Lesson planning and differentiation
    • Classroom management and positive behavior strategies
  • Conduct regular classroom observations to ensure strong implementation of curriculum and instructional practices
  • Provide constructive feedback and coaching to teachers and teaching assistants
  • Identify staff learning needs and provide just-in-time training and support
  • Review lesson plans and instructional tools, offering guidance and sharing best practices
  1. Instructional Leadership & Program Support
  • Support effective implementation of curriculum and instructional practices across classrooms
  • Collaborate with the Site Leadership Team to ensure a safe, productive learning environment
  • Monitor scholar academic and social progress and recommend program adjustments as needed
  • Serve as a substitute or lead teacher when necessary to maintain instructional continuity
  • Communicate with families and staff to support scholar success
  1. Assessment & Data-Driven Instruction
  • Coordinate administration of diagnostic and ongoing assessments
  • Analyze assessment data with teaching staff to determine appropriate instructional groups
  • Coach teachers on using assessment results to adjust instruction and differentiation strategies
  • Ensure assessments and family communications are completed consistently and on schedule

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  • Participate in all required Power Scholars Academy and YMCA training sessions
  • Engage in continuous learning to support instructional excellence and youth development
